Managing our Research Literature Review - Perkongsian bersama

Assalamualaikum dan salam penuh takzim.....

It has been quite a long time since this blog been updated. My intention to frequent this blog, has been put to delay by a lots of other major events that happen in life. Alhamdulillah, I am very grateful to Almighty Allah for giving me the opportunity to attend a course that I find it very useful. It is on how to manage information for your PhD.

One of the things that make me stumble through this journey of researching is on how to manage my literature review information. I found out that one template from the course that really help me alot in managing my literature review information.

Therefore, I want to share it with all of you here.

Hopefully it will benefit all of us who are doing our research now.

Langley, L.N., et al., Packaged semiconductor laser optical phase-locked loop (OPLL) for photonic generation, processing and transmission of microwave signals. Microwave Theory and Techniques, IEEE Transactions on, 1999. 47(7): p. 1257-1264.


Semiconductor laser OPPL microwave photonic transmitter. The laser has a free-running summed linewidth of 6MHz and the OPLL has a feedback bandwidth of 70MHz. Phase error variance of 0.05 rad2. Carrier phase-error variance of 7×10-4 rad2 in a 15 MHz bandwidth.


Semiconductor lasers for used in OPLL must meet a number of requirements:

  1. For a given loop delay, the laser linewidth sets the minimum phase-error variance that can be obtained. For a minimum delay of approximately 0.4ns a beat linewidth of less than 8MHz is required to meet the phase-error variance specification.
  2. At high frequency, the response is dominated by band-filling and plasma effects, giving a blue-shifting response.
  3. Laser output power above 5mW is required to maintain a high loop gain.
  4. Intensity noise and intensity modulation should be low, as any fluctuation in output power will be converted to phase noise by the loop.

Should look into:

  1. loop propagation delay
  2. phase-error variance
  3. beat linewidth of lasers
  4. Are we in need to use the loop feedback bandwidth specification? (This might be incorporated into the OPLL that we bought.)

The key OPLL performance parameter used in this paper are:

  1. Summed laser linewidth
  2. Loop bandwidth
  3. Loop gain (at LO = 9GHz)
  4. Loop propagation delay
  5. Total phase-error variance
  6. Phase-error variance
  7. Acquisition range
  8. Operation frequency


This paper is studied for the contribution towards the phase locking system that they exhibited. Their methodology in the experiment and their results are the main component to be studied

Above is an example of a table that we can be used for our literature reviewing. All the information needed for report writing will be easy to obtained through this technique. We can avoid plagiarism by doing this, because we can distinguish the author words and sentences from our own summary.
